Adventure. Nature. Culture. Silence. And a side of Hurghada that many visitors never see. When most people think of Hurghada, they picture the Red Sea turquoise water, coral reefs, beaches and sunshine. But just a short journey inland, another world begins. The Eastern Desert opens up into a spectacular landscape of mountains, valleys, rocky canyons and ancient routes, where Bedouin traditions, wildlife, geology and history come together.

This is the world of Mountain Goats.

Established in 2016, Mountain Goats was created from a partnership between Sytze Boomsma, fascinated by the desert and mountains, and Sheikh Hamada, who grew up in the desert and knows its landscape and traditions from a lifetime of experience. Today, the team brings together experienced desert guides, local Bedouin team members and outdoor enthusiasts. But Mountain Goats isn't simply about taking people into the desert. It is about experiencing it.

A Different Kind of Safari

Forget the idea of simply driving across the desert, taking a few photographs and returning home. Mountain Goats takes a more personal approach. Guests travel by 4×4 into the Red Sea mountains before exploring the landscape on foot, discovering valleys, geological formations, wildlife, ancient history and places far away from the usual tourist routes. Some trips are adventurous. Others are peaceful. And some are designed simply to give people the chance to stop, breathe and appreciate where they are.

Sunset in the Mountains

One of Mountain Goats' signature experiences is its Sunset Trip. As the afternoon heat begins to disappear, the journey heads towards the mountains, where guests can walk, explore and find a viewpoint to watch the sun fall behind the rugged landscape. Then comes another memorable part of the evening dinner under the stars. A traditional Bedouin style dinner is prepared in the desert, creating an experience that feels a world away from the restaurants and nightlife of the coast. As darkness arrives, the desert changes completely. The mountains become silhouettes, the campfire comes alive and the sky above the Red Sea mountains becomes the backdrop.

Bedouin Nights

For Mountain Goats, the desert is also about the people who know it best. The company's team includes members of the local Bedouin community, whose families have lived in the Eastern Desert for generations. Their knowledge brings another dimension to the experience — stories, traditions, food, coffee, music and an understanding of the landscape that cannot simply be learned from a guidebook. A Bedouin night can be as simple as sitting around a fire, drinking traditional coffee and tea, listening to music and looking up at a sky filled with stars. And perhaps that's the point. Sometimes the most memorable experiences are the simplest ones.

Yoga, Meditation & the Silence of the Desert

Not every adventure needs adrenaline. Mountain Goats also offers experiences built around yoga, meditation, mindfulness and simply reconnecting with nature. Imagine practising yoga surrounded by mountains, with no traffic, no city noise and no distractions just the desert landscape and the changing light. Their special full-moon experiences combine sunset, yoga, personal meditation, stargazing, traditional Bedouin music and dinner beneath the night sky. It is perhaps one of the most unexpected ways to experience the Red Sea. The desert becomes a place not only to explore, but to slow down.

The Desert as a Classroom

Mountain Goats also takes its philosophy beyond tourism. The company organises field trips and programmes for schools and youth groups, turning the desert into a natural classroom. Students can explore geology, nature, wildlife, history and Bedouin culture while walking through valleys and mountain landscapes. The experiences are also designed to encourage teamwork, responsibility, confidence and respect for nature and local culture. For children growing up surrounded by screens, traffic and technology, spending a day away from all of that can be an education in itself. The desert provides the classroom. The mountains provide the lesson.

More Than a Jeep Safari

Mountain Goats' experiences can range from sunset excursions and desert hikes to mountain adventures, climbing, historical exploration, wildlife spotting, stargazing, yoga and customised private trips. That variety means there isn't necessarily a single "Mountain Goats experience." You can choose your adventure. You can challenge yourself. You can bring the family. You can take a group of students. Or you can simply disappear into the desert for an evening of peace and perspective.

Hurghada Has Another Side

For those who live here, the desert can sometimes become part of the background something we drive past without really seeing. Mountain Goats invites people to look again. Beyond the hotels and resorts lies an extraordinary landscape with millions of years of geological history, ancient human routes, Bedouin traditions, wildlife and some spectacular places from which to watch the sun disappear. So, next time you are wondering what to do in Hurghada, perhaps don't look towards the sea. Look towards the mountains. The desert is waiting.
